Tea ceremonies have been around for thousands of years, honoring the plant Camellia sinensis, better known as tea. A tea ritual promotes respect, harmony, & tranquility. One of the most important purposes of a tea ceremony is to create an atmosphere where the host & guests can enjoy good conversation & strengthen social bonds.

Tea culture came from China. Legend says, Emperor Shen Nong was in his courtyard when the leaves of a Camellia sinensis tree fell into his cup of hot water & so the brew was discovered! Exquisite taste paired with the addition of anti inflammatory properties & mood enhancing qualities with exhilarating effects has made tea the world’s most popular beverage!

During the tea ceremony, an herbal infusion will be made. An infusion is prepared by bringing the desired amount of water to a boil, pouring it over the herb, & letting it sit covered for twenty minutes. After straining the herb, the tea can be drunk immediately, or cooled to room temperature & refrigerated. The infusion can be prepared in a French press, stainless steel pot, ceramic, or glass teapot. Leaves, flowers, & fruits can be made into an herbal infusion. Herbs that are thicker like roots & bark with a higher percentage of volatile oils can be infused too.

If you’ve ever made a cup of tea with a teabag then you’ve made an herbal infusion. This is a better choice than tinctures for those who want or need to avoid alcohol. Medicinal herbs tend to have a bitter taste. Licorice, cardamom, & cinnamon can assist in masking the bitter flavors.

White, black, green, oolong, and pu’erh ( a post-fermented type of tea) are forms of the plant Camellia sinensis & traditionally, tea ceremonies are held to honor that plant. Due to popularity, tea’s common name today sometimes replaces “herbal infusions”, or tisanes, although actual tea is not in the beverage.

The purpose of holding a tea ceremony is to honor the herbs themselves, listen deeply to our body, & hold space for one another & ourselves. MA&W tea ceremonies are intended to be a positive & soothing experience to help the community connect & build peace. It’s the cut off from the fast pace of everyday life to enjoy a profoundly therapeutic space; inviting you to feel, not distract or numb. This tea experience is about valuing the beauty in simplicity & presence.
